Job Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Business Development to join our team at De Gruyter. As a key member of our publishing team, you will be responsible for driving business growth and profitability in the professional book market.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Research and analyze market trends to identify new opportunities in the professional book sector.
  2. Acquire high-quality content that aligns with our publishing goals and market demands.
  3. Collaborate with authors and internal teams to facilitate the publishing process, including production, promotion, sales, and distribution.
  4. Recruit and secure contracts with professional book publishers to sell their content on the Sciendo platform.
  5. Train and work with sales and marketing teams to maximize revenue in the institutional channel.
  6. Oversee the development and execution of strategic business plans to drive growth and profitability in the professional book market.
Requirements
  1. Minimum 5 years of experience in both sales and acquisitions in the publishing industry.
  2. Ability to sign and publish approximately 40-50 titles annually within projected revenue and profit guidelines.
  3. Knowledge of professional publishing audience, markets, sales channels, and competition.
  4. Motivated, self-starter, results-oriented personality.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills for successful interaction and contract negotiation with authors and publishers.
  6. Ability to manage, train, and support team members.
  7. Ability to travel (10%) and to work from a home office.
  8. Excellent knowledge of MS Office, publishing software, and platforms, terminology.
