About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Business Development to join our team at De Gruyter. As a key member of our publishing team, you will be responsible for driving business growth and development through strategic partnerships, sales, and marketing initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Market Research and Analysis: Conduct thorough market research and analysis to identify new business opportunities and trends in the professional book sector.
  • Content Acquisition: Acquire high-quality content from reputable publishers and authors that align with our publishing goals and market demands.
  • Collaboration and Team Management: Collaborate effectively with authors, internal teams, and external partners to facilitate the entire publishing process, including production, promotion, sales, and distribution.
  • Business Development and Partnerships: Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with professional book publishers to sell their content on the Sciendo platform.
  • Sales and Marketing Strategy: Work closely with sales and marketing teams to develop and execute effective sales and marketing strategies to maximize revenue in the institutional channel.
  • Business Planning and Growth: Oversee the development and execution of strategic business plans to drive growth and profitability in the professional book market.
Requirements
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in both sales and acquisitions in the publishing industry.
  • Performance Metrics: Ability to sign and publish approximately 40-50 titles annually within projected revenue and profit guidelines.
  • Industry Knowledge: Strong knowledge of the professional publishing audience, markets, sales channels, and competition.
  • Personal Qualities: Motivated, self-starter, results-oriented personality with strong interpersonal skills for successful interaction and contract negotiation with authors and publishers.
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to manage, train, and support team members.
  • Flexibility: Ability to travel (10%) and work from a home office.
  • Technical Skills: Excellent knowledge of MS Office, publishing software, and platforms, as well as industry terminology.
