Job Summary
This series maintains a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public.
The role is courteous, considerate, and prompt in dealings with the public, and positions are assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.
Job Duties
Highway Operations Worker (Entry-level, Grade 14): operate motorized vehicles and equipment, perform pavement and landscape care, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, deliver equipment and materials, ensure environmental compliance, and maintain vehicles and equipment.
Highway Operations Tech 1 (Apprentice, Grade 17): advanced duties in the same areas, receiving training in more complex tasks.
Highway Operations Tech 2 (Intermediate, Grade 18): perform broad scope of intermediate highway operational duties, supervise subordinates, inspect work, train staff, and guide operations.
Highway Operations Tech 3 (Senior, Grade 19): execute high-level duties or supervisory responsibilities for the series.
Qualifications
Highway Operations Worker: 6 months of roadway/highway experience required.
Highway Operations Tech 1: 1 year of roadway/highway experience required.
Highway Operations Tech 2: 2 years of roadway/highway experience required.
Highway Operations Tech 3: 3 years of roadway/highway experience required.
Selective Preferences
Employees must obtain their Arizona Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "A" permit within 90 days of hire and the license within 6 months.
For Tech 1–3: a manual or automatic transmission CDL with "N" tanker endorsement is required prior to the start date.
Pre-Employment Requirements
Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all CDL holders.
Position requires 24-hour emergency response; ability to reach the maintenance yard within 30 minutes.
Work may involve extremes of temperature, rugged terrain, high traffic, and terrain; ability to lift/carry 50 lbs.
Newly hired employees must complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
