POSITION OVERVIEW

AFP is seeking a skilled English-language video producer who will be based in Bogotá and will report to the regional headquarters in Montevideo. This role encompasses the production and editing of a diverse range of news and feature stories from both Latin America and North America.

This position is fast-paced and stimulating, requiring the ability to produce and edit hard news segments—whether from a video journalist on-site or through live feeds—as well as features and lighter news stories for broadcast clients. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of AFP's regional coordinator and chief editors for Latin America.

Exceptional writing and narration skills for short-format video packages are critical for this role, alongside strong shooting capabilities and a discerning eye for visual storytelling.

A multimedia approach is essential, necessitating close collaboration with the regional text, photo, and graphics teams.

It is imperative to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the news reported. Familiarity with the complexities of user-generated content and adherence to AFP's guidelines regarding its use is expected.

The role demands a proactive multimedia strategy, coordinating closely with text reporters and photographers.

Flexibility in working hours is required, including early mornings, late nights, and weekends.

All AFP journalists play a vital role in the newsgathering process across all formats, contributing to the unified goal of delivering high-quality multimedia journalism. Collaboration is key; text journalists may contribute to video content, while visual journalists assist in gathering information for text reports.

Effective planning is crucial, and you will be responsible for keeping AFP's integrated calendar system, Iris360, updated to facilitate the planning of upcoming news events and their coverage.

Adherence to AFP's ethics charter and editorial guidelines is essential. Candidates should be well-versed in the handling of user-generated content and comply with AFP's social media guidelines.

Monitoring social media is a key responsibility, and you will strictly follow the Agency's protocols regarding social media engagement. You will also contribute to combating misinformation by supporting journalists involved in digital verification and ensuring you are well-trained in various online investigation methods, which are now indispensable for all journalists.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, the nature of this role may adapt in response to coverage demands and the needs of a diverse client base.

REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Minimum of two years' experience in producing short-format hard news and feature packages for web and broadcast.
  • Strong social media skills and experience in sourcing user-generated content.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of online video production.
  • Excellent news judgment, awareness of current events, and a talent for narration.
  • Proficiency in English is required; fluency in Spanish and a good command of French are advantageous. Portuguese is a plus.
  • Strong writing skills with a focus on news content.
  • Proven shooting capabilities.
  • Proficient in non-linear editing, preferably using Premiere.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to perform calmly under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends.
  • Experience in field production.
