POSITION OVERVIEW

AFP is seeking a skilled English-language video producer who will be based in Bogotá and will report to the regional headquarters in Montevideo. This role involves managing a diverse range of news stories and features from Latin America and North America.

The position is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring the production and editing of hard news segments—either through on-ground video journalism or live feeds—as well as features and lighter stories intended for broadcast clients. The producer will work under the guidance of AFP's regional coordinator and chief editors for Latin America.

Essential skills for this role include sharp writing and narration abilities for short-format video packages, alongside excellent shooting capabilities and a strong visual sensibility.

A multimedia approach is crucial, as the producer will collaborate closely with the regional text, photo, and graphics teams.

It is imperative to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the news being reported. Familiarity with user-generated content (UGC) and adherence to AFP's guidelines regarding its use is required.

The role demands a commitment to a multimedia perspective, necessitating coordination with text reporters and photographers.

Flexibility in working hours is essential, as the position may require early mornings, late nights, and weekends.

All AFP journalists play a vital role in the newsgathering process across various formats, working collaboratively towards the shared goal of delivering high-quality multimedia journalism. This includes the integration of text journalism, which is crucial for video content, picture captions, and graphics.

Planning is a key responsibility, and the producer will ensure that events are accurately reflected in AFP's integrated calendar system, Iris360, allowing clients and bureaus to prepare for upcoming news events and their coverage.

Adherence to AFP's ethics charter and editorial guidelines is a fundamental expectation. Candidates should also be well-versed in the handling of user-generated content, following AFP's editorial standards for social media.

The producer will actively monitor social media and comply with the Agency's guidelines regarding social media engagement. Contributing to the fight against misinformation is also a key aspect of the role, supporting journalists engaged in digital verification and ensuring training in various online investigation methods, which are now essential for all journalists.

In this evolving media landscape, the nature of the job may adapt in response to coverage demands and the needs of a diverse client base.

REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Minimum of two years' experience in producing short-format hard news and news feature packages for web and broadcast.
  • Strong social media skills and experience in sourcing user-generated content.
  • Excellent understanding of online video.
  • Solid news judgment, awareness of current events, and a talent for narration.
  • Proficiency in English is required, with fluency in Spanish and a good command of French being advantageous. Portuguese is a plus.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Demonstrated shooting capabilities.
  • Proficient non-linear editing skills, preferably using Premiere.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to perform well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends.
  • Experience in field production.
