International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is seeking a highly skilled Environmental and Social Development Specialist-Direct Investment to join its team in the Central America, Caribbean, Colombia, and Mexico (CCM) region.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic team of professionals who are passionate about promoting sustainable development and reducing the environmental and social impacts of IFC's investments. As an Environmental and Social Development Specialist-Direct Investment, you will play a critical role in providing guidance and support to clients and investment teams on environmental and social matters related to IFC's Performance Standards and Sustainability Policy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead or contribute to the review of environmental and social issues and risks in new investments and select advisory engagements for the relevant sector.
  • Work on IFC investments throughout the project cycle, covering early review, appraisal, public disclosure, board review & approval, commitment & disbursement, and project supervision, delivering fully drafted project-related internal and external reports.
  • Lead or contribute to the identification and development of environmental and social risk mitigation measures and value-add solutions that support clients in addressing identified issues.
  • Provide clear and responsive guidance to IFC investment teams on environmental and social risk management in project decision-making and processing throughout the investment cycle, including clear communication to teams.
  • For FI sector projects, perform analyses on the development and implementation of clients' Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS).
  • Support the formulation of environmental and social legal conditions for IFC projects.
  • When leading environmental and social assessments, ensure effective and efficient use of staff, consultants, and resources, ensuring the timely completion of deliverables. Provide guidance and support to team members.
  • Support industry teams and clients in response to Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO) and Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) requests where needed.
  • Support analyzing and reporting internally portfolio data, missing information, and support follow-up on pending issues.
  • Support client environmental and social capacity-building.
Requirements
  • Advanced degree (Masters) in science, engineering, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Minimum of seven years of professional experience working on environmental and social management, monitoring, and/or due diligence, with a preference for private sector experience in CCM in the infrastructure, manufacturing, services, agribusiness, and financial intermediary (FI) sectors.
  • Experience working with IFC/World Bank/E&S Policies and Standards, specifically IFC Performance Standards.
  • Willingness to travel regularly.
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to think strategically, analyze and summarize diverse sources, and draw conclusions from limited data.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing circumstances, organize and prioritize deliverables, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely on complex environmental and social issues in spoken and written form.
  • Proficiency in English essential, with Spanish as an advantage.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team, influence and negotiate point of view within teams.
  • High personal integrity and emotional intelligence, with the ability to handle sensitive matters in a discreet and respectful manner, respond diplomatically, and remain calm under pressure.
