Engineering Director

The Engineering Director is primarily responsible for the delivery and quality of services in their product area, as well as the culture and morale of the product teams in the area. The Engineering Director also proposes and leads engineering wide improvement activities related to processes, innovation, and ways of working.
The impact of this role is that an area consisting of multiple product engineering teams is regularly delivering new high quality services in a largely autonomous manner, and that any previously delivered or existing service is monitored and maintained. In addition, the area members are fully informed about information relevant to them and given clear expectations, clear justifications, and receive followup on the impact of their services.
The Engineering Director is further expected to have created a strong team of Engineering Managers who are capable of addressing most people management concerns without much direct intervention by the Engineering Director.
Further, the Engineering Director should be well versed in the products owned by their area; to become an Engineering Director, you should be an equal partner in helping set priorities and roadmap with Product, and be able to accurately assess the relative value of different roadmap items.
Finally, an Engineering Director should be capable of representing the Delivery Engineering departments to external parties, including stakeholders and C-level.
**Ultimately the Engineering Director is a balance between a tactical role (ensuring delivery and operation of their area remains at a high level) and a strategic role (determining the future path of both their area, the engineering department, and the company as a whole).**
**Tasks/ Duties**
**Working with Stakeholders**
- Collaborate with Area Senior Product Owner (or equivalent) and Business Area Owner (where appropriate) on:
- Priorities and delivery status
- Future roadmap
- Balance of technical vs feature development
- Collaborate with Head of Delivery, Head of Technology, VP Product, and CIO to propose engineering departmental improvements and agree on action plans
- Ensure stakeholders have an easy source for accessing the status of projects
- Engineering Director is expected to be able to understand the pros and cons of various courses of action, come to a conclusion on the best course, and "sell" that plan to stakeholders
**Driving High Quality Delivery**
- Build teams in their area to the point of being able to delivery predictably with mínimal intervention
- Create processes within the area to ensure maintenance of existing features
- Sets delivery goals for direct reports and holds them accountable for completion
- Stays up to date on industry and competitor trend
**Team Management**
- Ensure all required formal performance assessments are completed within the area
- Set and regularly update the area on OKRs
- Regularly update the area on company wide performance and initiatives
**Engineering Leadership**
- Problem that needs to be solved
- Ideas for improvement and how it will solve the problem
- Action plan for implementing those improvements with Engineering Director as the primary driver
- Action plan for reporting progress
- Measurement and reporting on impact of improvement
**Skills/ Knowledge/Experience**
- 7+ years working in a software delivery environment in a managerial capacity
- Deep understanding of software engineering practices and the software development life cycle
- Deep understanding of the use of Jira and Confluence to manage software delivery and track performance metrics for a range of teams
- Capable of participating and contributing in high level technical discussions
- Capable of participating and contributing in product and business area level discussions unrelated to engineering including regulatory, compliance, marketing, and others
- Excellent problem-solving skills (including the ability to diagnose and resolve complex problems)
- Ability to "sell" ideas for improvement to a variety of stakeholders and people from different cultures
- Strong attention to detail, ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment showing flexibility and adaptability in dynamic circumstances
- Excellent time management skills (prioritization and effectively managing multiple tasks and projects)
- Strong analytical skills (ability to comprehend and analyze business requirements and guide on how to create delivery plans)
- Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written, including the ability to present technical information to non-technical stakeholders, ability to facilitate meetings with a variety of involved teams and areas, listening and interpersonal skills with a commitment to continuous self-development, positive mindset)
