Director, Sustainable Tuna Program

- This position is based in Fiji, Samoa, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Australia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador or Peru**The Director,Sustainable Tuna Program will lead the development and implementation of a strategic, innovative, and science-based sustainable tuna program, developing and harnessing capacity in our organization and working with partners to drive improved social and environmental outcomes in pelagic fisheries. Working in the Center for Oceans, the Director will work closely with a range of partners and divisions at CI, including Regional Field Programs, Global Programs (e.g. Sustainable Lands and Waters, Moore Center for Science, and Natural Climate Solutions), Conservation Partnerships (e.g. Conservation Finance and public and private development teams) and key external partners.


The Director will support the strategic development and implementation of jurisdictional initiatives (at country and regional scales) to develop capacity, improve governance, and drive market incentives for sustainable tuna fisheries, working to develop sustainable production models that improve the environmental and social performance of fisheries.

Working in CI's Blue Foods initiative, alongside program leads in responsible aquaculture and coastal community fisheries, the Director plays a key and visible role in leading the delivery of high-impact outputs and developing innovative projects and proposals to achieve CI's vision and goals for sustainable tuna fisheries in priority geographies globally.

They is responsible for program development, ensuring that CI's sustainable tuna program strategies, initiatives, and outcomes advance human development and conservation priorities, including supporting the integration of sustainable production practices with ecosystem protections.


The Director will work with leadership in the Center for Oceans, Field Divisions, Development Division, Nature Positive Economies, and other units to support fundraising efforts for the program, including developing project proposals, actively pursuing new sources of funding, facilitating communication and ensuring coordination with other programs and staff, and advancing funding relationships with key partners and donors to secure program funding for regional and field activities.

They continuously represent CI to engage and influence key external stakeholders including government and NGO officials, donors, and other parties critical to program success.

As appropriate, they build and leverage strategic alliances with NGOs, businesses, or other entities that can further CI's mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the strategic development of jurisdictional initiatives (at country and regional scales) to develop capacity, improve governance, and drive market incentives for sustainable tuna fisheries, working with governments and key stakeholders to implement policy reform for effective fisheries governance; engaging key privatesector and donor partners to spur innovation and adoption of sustainability into business practices; and developing capacity in priority geographies for sustainable production practices.
  • Oversee value creation and innovation initiatives in the blue economy, driving increased food and livelihood security opportunities, innovative business models, and private sector partnerships, and work with key partners to drive increased value creation from sustainable tuna fisheries in key target geographies
  • Provide technical and programmatic oversight for sustainable tuna initiatives in a range of priority geographies, including managing staff, contractors, and partners through all aspects of the project life cycle including project planning, work plans, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on deliverables and project status; ensuring compliance with project standards, donor requirements and project alignment with institutional priorities; and advising on adaptive management strategies and capacity building needs to ensure project success.
  • Represent CI as a program lead, technical expert, and sector leader, and build alliances/engage key external stakeholders including government and NGO officials, donors, and others critical to project success.
  • Manage and monitor project budgets and write donor reports as required. Collaborate on and lead efforts to secure project funding, expand project pipeline, and manage funding relationships with key partners.
