Primary Purpose:

The primary purpose of this position is to develop exciting new products for the roof window, skylight, and sun tunnel markets; and to improve existing products as related to market desires, quality, delivery, and cost.

The Product Developer position is responsible for providing technical, engineering and project coordination services. This support may include, but is not limited to, new product development/product follow-up and production monitoring on a regular basis. This position may also require significant participation in design activities including market research, product scoping, concept ideation, and design.

In the course of their work, product developers must consider:

  1. who will buy the product and how they will use it,
  2. how to make the product easy and safe to use,
  3. how to make the product visually attractive to the target audience,
  4. what materials to use,
  5. how to make the product reliable, and
  6. how to make the product cost-effective and environmentally friendly to produce.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Meet with markets or colleagues to discuss the design requirements to complete project scopes and plans.
  • Manage and coordinate product design projects and ensure that projects are completed within established timeframes and budget goals.
  • Make sketches of ideas by hand or computer and develop the most effective ideas into detailed drawings using CADD computer software.
  • Research similar products and develop ideas for competition and patents.
  • Build preliminary cost estimates for inclusion in a business case.
  • Work closely with model makers to create samples or working models of designs.
  • Oversee testing of a chosen design, evaluate performance, and adjust as required.
  • Work closely with drawing office staff to create detailed drawings, bills of materials, and material requirements ensuring completeness and correctness.
  • Work within budgets and deadlines to meet project goals.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with sales and marketing, procurement, quality, model makers, testing, and other skilled staff.
  • Produce reports and present ideas to colleagues at various stages of the design process.
  • Assist with yearly budget preparation.
  • Perform other assignments as directed by local management.

Monthly Salary: $7930 - $9915 Compensation based on the skills and experience of the candidate.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Design or a technical field is required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of applied experience in product development is required.
  • Understands current and potential technologies and production processes of materials (such as wood, glass, metals and plastics).

A product developer should:

  • be creative with an eye for form, fit, and function,
  • understand different materials and production methods,
  • have technical, practical and scientific knowledge and ability,
  • work well in a team,
  • be persuasive and able to 'sell' their ideas to others,
  • be able to use drawings, 3D models and computer designs to express creative ideas,
  • have strong IT skills,
  • be good at planning and organizing,
  • be good at explaining ideas to people with varying levels of technical knowledge,
  • have listening and questioning skills for discussing design briefs and understanding feedback from colleagues, and
  • be an independent self-starter who is capable of functioning in a team environment.

  • present a positive and professional appearance and image.
