About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Design Director to lead our architectural project teams and drive innovation in design delivery. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of best practices, developing talent, and driving a culture of curiosity that transforms expectations for our clients, peers, and communities.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead Creative Efforts: Lead the creative efforts on client architecture projects, from programming and strategic planning to design development and production.
  2. Client Interface: Act as the primary design interface with clients and consultants, representing Gensler at meetings and presentations.
  3. Client Development: Participate in client development, marketing, and project interview efforts.
  4. Diversity and Inclusion: Champion diversity and inclusion goals.
  5. Talent Development: Act as an advocate and mentor for Gensler's next generation of talent, building Gensler's talent pipeline through recruiting and outreach with local design communities and universities.
  6. Design Quality: Direct all design aspects of the projects and proactively participate in design quality across the studio while maintaining high standards of design.
  7. Climate Champion: Act as the climate champion for the project, establishing an impactful design direction to ensure climate goals can be met.
  8. Environmental Impact: Active participation in environmental and social impact conversations that take place at the start of projects.
  9. Sustainable Design: Advocate for a sustainable design approach and promote environmentally conscious design practices.
  10. Design Resilience: Make Design Resilience and Design Purpose an integral part of every project.
  11. Collaboration: Fearlessly integrate and advocate for diverse points of view and expansive thinking, collaborating with all design synergy axes to ensure true synergy on projects.
  12. Design Expertise: Cultivate design expertise with the desire to learn, grow, and evolve continually.
  13. Communication: Effectively communicate design ideas by hand sketching and digital graphics.
  14. Design Quality Assurance: Hold the ultimate responsibility for overall design quality for all projects they are directing.
  15. Leadership Development: Assure mentoring the next generation of leadership.
  16. Design Culture: Continually improve design culture within studios (resources, discourse, initiatives, and recruiting).
  17. External Promotion: Participate in external promotional efforts regarding design, including leadership within the design community.

Requirements
  1. Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture.
  2. Experience: 10+ years of project experience in an architectural practice.
  3. Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of construction and regulations and building and zoning codes.
  4. Leadership Experience: Significant, demonstrable experience in leading teams to deliver projects through all stages, including Construction Administration.
  5. Technical Skills: Experience with Revit, Bluebeam Revu, and MS Office.
  6. Construction Codes: Proven knowledge of construction codes and regulations.
  7. Leadership and Mentoring: Experience in leading and mentoring multiple project teams in technical delivery concurrently.
  8. Flexibility: Flexibility to focus on concurrent projects in various stages of development.
  9. Communication and Leadership: Excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to lead and mentor.
  10. Client Relationships: Must be able to maintain existing client relationships and build new ones through excellent delivery and technical guidance.
  11. Conflict Resolution: Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, grace, and style.
