About the Role

As the Associated Director of Engineering, you’ll architect and maintain the critical infrastructure that powers multi‑platform commerce integrations, analytics, and automated reporting for businesses worldwide. You’ll serve as the bridge between our clients and engineering team, acting as a trusted technical advisor who can walk into any client meeting, understand their challenges, architect elegant solutions, and lead our team to deliver outstanding results. It’s both a management and technical role, requiring equal comfort in designing integration architecture, leading development teams, and building strong client relationships.

What You’ll Build

Platform integrations: design, develop and maintain robust integrations with Shopify Plus and key enterprise systems including ERP, OMS, CRM, PIM, fulfillment, and marketing automation platforms. Manage authentication flows, webhooks, data synchronization, and ensure scalable, reliable API communication across multiple environments. Stay ahead of Shopify API version changes, performance optimizations, and enterprise‑grade security and compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for key clients.

- Lead discovery sessions and gather detailed requirements.

- Develop and present multiple solution options with trade‑off analysis.

- Recommend optimal approaches based on technical feasibility, cost, and timeline.

- Build and maintain strong, trust‑based client relationships.

- Translate business needs into actionable technical solutions.

System Integration & Architecture

- Design, oversee, build and own integrations and extensions between Shopify Plus and enterprise systems (OMS, ERP, CRM, PIM, payment gateways, etc.).

- Build analytics and reporting features that process large‑scale order, product, and customer data.

- Implement robust background job systems for data synchronization, inventory updates, and workflow automation.

- Define integration patterns, API strategies, and data synchronization approaches.

- Evaluate third‑party platforms and recommend the best fit for client needs.

- Ensure data integrity, security, and performance across integrated systems.

- Troubleshoot complex integration issues and implement robust error handling.

- Design scalable, maintainable and performant integration architectures that support business growth.

Technical Leadership

- Make critical technical decisions and provide guidance on complex problems.

- Conduct code reviews and ensure engineering best practices.

- Stay current with e‑commerce and integration technology trends.

- Evaluate new tools, platforms, and integration approaches.

Technical Foundation

- 5+ years developing production‑grade backend systems Node.js and TypeScript, focused on Shopify Plus and enterprise e‑commerce integrations.

- 3+ years in a technical leadership or architect role.

- Strong experience with relational (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and document (MongoDB) databases for managing large‑scale product, order, and customer data.

- Proven track record building and maintaining Shopify API and third‑party integrations, handling API rate limits, retries, and error recovery.

- Hands‑on experience with background job and queue processing (BullMQ, Bull, or similar) for synchronization, fulfillment, and automation workflows.

- Deep TypeScript expertise with a strong commitment to type safety and maintainable architecture.

- Solid experience with REST and GraphQL APIs for e‑commerce and enterprise applications.

Engineering Practices

- Strong testing discipline: unit, integration, and end‑to‑end approaches.

- Experience with code quality tooling and Git workflows.

- Ability to write maintainable, well‑documented code.

- Understanding of database migrations and schema evolution.

- Production debugging and error handling experience.

Job Details

- Full‑time position, Monday‑Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Eastern Time.

- Salary: $8,000 USD – $13,000 USD based on experience.

- 100 % remote work environment.

- Unlimited PTO.

- Contract: Independent Contractor.
