Do you want to help make the world a better place with your experience advancing green, inclusive, and equitable economic policies? We are seeking a fixed-term (24 months) Associate Director, based in Bogotá to lead and coordinate Open Society-Latin America and the Caribbean's (OS-LAC) strategy to promote transformational economic policies centering the social dimensions of the climate transition that reduce inequality and bolster trust in democratic institutions.

  • Open Society-Latin America and the Caribbean
(OS-LAC) addresses rights and governance issues in Latin America and the Caribbean primarily through grant making, advocacy, and network-building. We focus on supporting Latin America and Caribbean efforts to reform democratic institutions in ways that are more open and responsive to citizens, advancing racial and gender justice, securing climate and economic justice, and reducing homicides in a region with extremely high levels of violence. OS-LAC works with other programs within the Open Society Foundations to share its understanding of political context in the region and identify strategic opportunities in the region.

As an Associate Director at Open Society-LAC you will:

  • Lead and coordinate Open Society-LAC's strategy to promote green, inclusive, and equitable economic policies.
  • Implement Open Society-LAC's economic justice strategy using multiple tools (principally advocacy and grantmaking, but also communications, social investments, or other tools).
  • Build key internal and external partnerships, including with government, multilateral and private sector actors, and leverage tools and expertise from across the Open Society network to advance shared goals and advocacy strategies around economic justice in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Work closely to integrate economic justice priorities across Open Society-LAC by advising and partnering with colleagues leading on climate justice, racial and gender justice, democratic governance, democracy protection, and violence reduction work.
  • Engage in direct advocacy, build strategic multisector alliances, and conceptualize and convene meetings to advance strategic goals.
  • Represent the foundation and its work in key venues through participation in relevant meetings, public speaking, writing, speeches, briefings, blob posts, and interviews.
  • Manage, monitor, and coordinate a grants portfolio as part of Open Society-LAC's multitool economic justice strategy, including identifying partners, writing grant recommendations, and implementing a strategy to review progress and assess impact.

What we are looking for:

  • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience working on the advancement of economic rights and justice.
  • Experience in Latin America and the Caribbean and a commitment to advancing social justice in the region.
  • Practical experience using multiple tools to effect change, including grantmaking, campaigning, coalitionbuilding, and policy research.
  • Fluency in Spanish, with excellent written and spoken English.
  • Collaborative disposition and experience engaging with partners across geographies, building and maintaining collaborative partnerships (civil society, government, and others), and working effectively within a complex global organization, with a high tolerance for risk and change.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and growth in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, antiracism and social justice.
  • Commitment to listening and working with humility; ways of working that are respectful to all people; and that support space and voice for all diverse perspectives in our workplace.

Desirable (but not required):

  • Proficiency in Portuguese.
  • Experience working to promote or implement green industrial policies.
