They have a dedicated in-house team of engineers, offering end-to-end software solutions and supporting client development staff augmentation. Catering to companies of all sizes and industries, including some of the world's largest brands, Sonatafy Technology is a trusted provider of nearshore enterprise-level cloud and mobile application software development services.

Sonatafy seeking a Principal Data Engineer to lead the redesign and performance optimization of the core data warehouse and related APIs for one of our amazing customers. This is a hands-on leadership role working alongside the Head of Engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Data Architecture & Optimization

  • Analyze and re-architect the existing Postgres database to eliminate over-normalization and improve query performance.
  • Introduce indexing, partitioning, caching, and replication strategies for high-throughput workloads.

2. Performance & Reliability

  • Refactor or replace the current dynamic query engine responsible for 50+ table joins per report.
  • Diagnose and resolve bottlenecks in Postgres query planning and execution.
  • Implement near real-time data pipelines for weekly ingest (game data) and high-volume read scenarios (API and analytics queries).

3. Data Engineering Leadership

  • Own the end-to-end data platform modernization roadmap in partnership with the Head of Engineering.
  • Educate internal engineers on modern data engineering principles, act as the internal SME for database and query optimization.

5. Security and Data Governance

  • Implement persona-based data access models ensuring strict permission boundaries.
  • Maintain compliance and integrity of sensitive team data (e.g., "translations" and play call terminologies).

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, Database Architect, or Principal Engineer in high-scale, read-heavy systems
  • Expert-level proficiency in PostgreSQL schema design, optimization, and performance tuning
  • Proven experience re-architecting highly normalized databases for analytical workloads
  • Strong grasp of query planning, indexing, caching, and partitioning
  • Experience implementing data pipelines and ETL/ELT frameworks across distributed systems
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills. Must be proactive, articulate, and comfortable managing stakeholders

Nice to haves:

  • Prior work in sports analytics, betting, or media data systems
  • Experience with AI-assisted query generation or semantic query systems
  • Knowledge of functional programming paradigms (Elixir, Erlang, or similar)
