Role Overview We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our growing team to lead the data strategy for a high-profile Payment Gateway Migration . While you will still design and optimize scalable data pipelines, your primary mission is to use data to untangle a monolithic legacy system. You will act as the architect of our migration intelligence, building the data foundation that allows us to map merchants to features, prioritize migration waves, and ensure a seamless transition for our clients. Your work will be directly aligned with client needs to ensure project success. Key Responsibilities Establish a deterministic mapping system that connects merchants to the specific gateway features they utilize (e.g., recurring billing, fraud modules, specific card types). Analyze legacy data to identify "hidden" features or custom configurations that must be accounted for in the destination system. Design data models and scoring algorithms to group merchants/features into "Migration Waves" based on feature compatibility and business priority. Create and maintain a detailed data catalog of features available within the Gateway system to ensure parity with the destination system. Build automated views to track feature adoption and "Migration Readiness" across the merchant base. Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines to extract configuration and transaction data from the legacy monolith into a modern analytical warehouse. Consolidate structured (transaction logs) and unstructured (contract/config blobs) data into data lakes and cloud warehouses to support the migration team. Identify and fix bottlenecks in the data extraction process to ensure the migration assessment runs efficiently at scale. Partner with Data Architects and Business Analysts to align on the definition of "features" and "merchant readiness". Ensure strict adherence to data governance and security standards, particularly regarding PCI-DSS sensitive data during the analysis phase. Requirements Education & Experience Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field. Experience: Lead – 8+ years in data engineering, with a must have in background in FinTech/Payments. This is Sr 2 with leads skills or an Sr 3. Senior Lvl 2 – 5-8 yrs in data engineering without leads skills, Payments a strong “nice” to have Senior – 5+ years in data engineering, Payments a nice to have Technical Expertise Advanced SQL & Forensics: Expert-level SQL skills for deep data analysis, recursive querying, and reconstructing business logic from database schemas. Python: Strong skills in Python (3.6+) for scripting complex data mapping logic and automation. Cloud Platforms: Experience with AWS or Azure, specifically for building analytical environments (Redshift, Snowflake, Synapse). ETL/ELT: Proven experience building pipelines that transform raw logs into actionable business insights. Preferred Qualifications Experience reverse-engineering legacy monolithic databases. Strong knowledge of data governance, PCI compliance, and security. Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions) to automate the deployment of migration logic.
